Why are some units typed as plural, while others are singular?

As a native english speaker, this is exactly the way I would write this list of units. I don't know why, it just seems right somehow. Not a very helpful reply, but I think that the admins just decided to type it like that and never thought anything of it.

All the ones that make sense to be plural are plural. It's not just the ones you underlined that are plural.

A single tank isnt much, a single general can turn battles and a single sentry plane can spot armies. dont know about the AA though
