Is there any way to actually pause or save the game that you are in the middle of?

Actually, you do CAN. But, if other players agree;
What you can do is change the game turn time to 12-48h, and then change it back to normal. Though, you'll have to have almost everyone (probably everyone in the future) agree with this.
Therefore, you can't pause your game for more than 2 days.

Yes but at least you can take a break. 48h is a good pause.
