I've been asking around because the documentation is very vague on this... what determines how many "available units" a city gets during reinforcement?

One player noted that it seems to correlate to the number of militia in a given city. If so, can it be increased by increasing the # of militia in a given city, or is this just an effect, not the cause?

Also: I've been getting conflicting answers on whether or not reinforcements stack. For example, if a city that normally receives 2 reinforcements per cycle doesn't use those 2 reinforcements, will it have 4 reinforcements after the next cycle comes around? Or is it a "use them or lose them" game mechanic?

The documentation is pretty good but it really needs more clarity around how reinforcements are handled.

No, it cannot be increased by increasing the number of militia. The number of militia that appear in the city when you capture it is how much you'll be able to recruit when reinforcements are available. This number varies from city-to-city, but the maximum is 8.

Also, it's "use them or lose them" as you said.

Thanks for the clarification... does this mean that if a city's base # of militia is modified in some way (for example, if a player conquers the city and moves the militia elsewhere) then there is no way for another player to reliably determine the reinforcement # of the city? It would be nice if this stat was listed with the rest of the city info.

Edit: Someone pointed out that militia numbers always return to baseline when you conquer a city... however, I'm talking about *before* you conquer the city.

So you're saying someone takes a city then moves out the militia on the next turn? If so, then yes, there is no other way to tell how many units you'll get as recruitment.

Once you play more you will start to know how many units each city produces by heart.

No, you can just click on a city and it tells you I think.

2.7 Million and + : 8 reinforcements
2.3 Million and + : 7 reinforcements (Vienna=2.3 million=6reinforcements.... but salt lake city 2.3=7reinforcements)
2.0 Million and + : 6 reinforcements
1.6 Million and + : 5 reinforcements
1.3 Million and + : 4 reinforcements
0.9 Million and + : 3 reinforcements
0.6 Million and + : 2 reinforcements
0.5 Million and - : 1 reinforcements

Of course these are the numbers in Aftwerwind. Sometime representing the metropolitan area population, other times just the city population or a weird number between metroplitan area and city population. So don't use any real life sources if you want to know the reinforcements just check the population of the city in afterwind.
