Neutral transport glitch

I was playing a game when a guy backed out. He had a handfull of transports loaded with tanks, i attacked the now neutral transports. My ships fought the tanks instead of fighting the transport, resulting in the destruction of my fleet. I hovered above the units so i could see the attack and defence (4/6) and despite my attack of over 100 i still lost.
